Center for Environmental & Urban Studies
SMC’s Center for Environmental and Urban Studies (CEUS) provides numerous displays and sources of information to help individuals become more efficient and lead a sustainable life that reduces impacts on the environment. CEUS is also a center for the SMC students, faculty, and staff who participate in our academic program, and sponsors the Environmental Issues Lectures, which you will find listed elsewhere in this brochure.

Resource Library – The CEUS library and information center offers books, articles, videos, and displays on subjects ranging from general environmental information to specific topics such as home solar-heating systems, environmental policy, and vegetarianism. Other helpful, informative resources are also provided through online links at the CEUS website (www.smc.edu/CEUS/LINKS.htm).

Information/Coordination – CEUS offers information about local environmental events and organizations, and assists with events coordination through publicizing them and communicating with all interested campus and community groups.

Demonstration Gardens – “garden\garden,” a joint project with the City of Santa Monica supported by a grant from MWD, is a public conservation experiment featuring two side-by-side residential gardens (at 1718 and 1724 Pearl Street, opposite the College). One is an efficient “Mediterranean” (xeriscape) garden with drip irrigation and drought-tolerant native plants such as California lilac, sage, and meadow grass. The other is a more conventional water-using garden with sprinklers and East-Coast-style bedding plants, azaleas, and lawn.

For hours or other information about CEUS and its programs, visit our website (www.smc.edu/CEUS), call (310) 434-3909, or drop by 1744 Pearl Street, Santa Monica.

Sustainable Works
SMC’s Center for Environmental and Urban Studies (CEUS) is the headquarters for Sustainable Works, a nonprofit organization funded by the City of Santa Monica’s Sustainable City Program and Santa Monica College. Sustainable Works offers special programs that show individuals and businesses how they can adopt sustainable practices that improve quality of life, reduce impacts on the environment, and reduce costs.

Sustainable Crews – A 9-week environmental education workshop for Santa Monica College students and a 6-week environmental education workshop for Santa Monica residents. Crews meet weekly to learn how to incorporate recycling, energy conservation, and other sustainable practices into their daily life. Student Crew members also volunteer three hours to Santa Monica BayKeeper, Children’s Nature Institute, and other nonprofit groups that work to reduce environmental impact and improve quality of life in the community.

Business Greening Program – Free on-site assessment, list of recommended actions for businesses to choose, and follow-up meetings to ensure efficient practices for energy, water, waste, chemicals, transportation, and purchasing. After completing the program, Santa Monica businesses can apply for Green Business Certification and local Sustainable Quality Awards.
